Exploring Implant-Supported Bridges

Can you explain what an Implant-Supported Bridge is?

When teeth are missing, a traditional bridge depends on neighboring teeth for support, whereas an implant-supported bridge is secured to titanium posts in the jaw, eliminating the need for adjacent teeth. The number of posts required is determined by the size of the bridge. Relying on natural teeth for support can lead to damage from added pressure, but an implant-supported bridge prevents this issue by replacing missing teeth without impacting natural teeth.

How do I go about getting an Implant-Supported Bridge?

An implant-supported bridge is made up of three key components: implants, prosthetic teeth, and abutments. The implants, which resemble screws or cylinders, are placed into the jaw. The prosthetic teeth are designed to mimic the look and function of natural teeth. Abutments are attached to the implants to connect the new teeth. The bridge is anchored using a few implants, depending on the number of missing teeth. Initially, temporary teeth may be attached to the implants or healing caps may be used to protect them. The gum tissue is then reshaped and stitched in place. Over the next few months, the implants and bone will fuse together to create a strong foundation for the new teeth. Once the healing process is complete, the bridge is attached to the implants, resulting in a natural-looking smile that allows for proper chewing and speaking.

What advantages does an Implant-Supported Bridge offer?

Besides the quick treatment duration, full-arch dental implants offer numerous benefits compared to traditional dentures:

  • Immediate replacement teeth in as little as one day
  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Reduced pain and swelling
  • Elimination of ill-fitting dentures
  • No need for denture adhesives
  • Enhanced security similar to natural teeth
  • Reduced number of dental appointments
  • Cost-effective compared to conventional implants
  • Life-changing results

Who would be an ideal candidate for an Implant-Supported Bridge?

To qualify for implant-supported bridges, it is essential to have excellent oral health and sufficient jawbone tissue to support dental implants. If you do not meet these criteria initially, you may need to undergo a preparatory procedure such as a bone graft or sinus lift. Prior to implant placement, any existing oral health problems like gum disease or tooth decay must be resolved.
