Restoring Your Smile and Gum Health

Gum recession, the gradual wearing away of gum tissue, can lead to a variety of problems, including tooth sensitivity, an unattractive smile, and even tooth loss. At Lifetime Dental & Implant Center, we offer advanced gum grafting procedures to address gum recession and restore both the health and aesthetics of your smile.

Gum recession can occur for various reasons, including aggressive brushing, periodontal disease, and even genetics. When gum tissue recedes, it exposes the tooth roots, leaving them vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, and further gum recession.

The Benefits of Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that involves covering exposed tooth roots with grafted tissue. This helps to:
  • Reduce Tooth Sensitivity: Exposed tooth roots can be extremely sensitive to hot, cold, and even sweet foods and drinks. Gum grafting effectively covers the exposed areas, significantly reducing or eliminating sensitivity.
  • Improve Aesthetic Appearance: Gum recession can make your teeth appear longer and your smile look "gummy." Gum grafting can restore a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance to your smile.
  • Prevent Further Gum Recession: By covering exposed roots, gum grafting helps protect them from further decay and prevents the progression of gum recession.
  • Enhance Gum Health: Gum grafting can help stabilize gum tissue, preventing further bone loss and supporting overall oral health.

Types of Gum Grafting Procedures

  • Free Gingival Graft: In this procedure, tissue is harvested from the roof of your mouth (palate) and transplanted to the area of gum recession.
  • Connective Tissue Graft: This procedure involves harvesting a thin layer of tissue from the underside of the palate and grafting it to the recession site.
  • Acellular Dermal Matrix Allograft: This innovative technique utilizes processed human tissue as the graft material, eliminating the need to harvest tissue from the patient's mouth.

Procedure, Recovery and Aftercare

Gum grafting is typically performed under local anesthesia. During the procedure, your dentist will carefully create a small incision to receive the graft. The graft material is then placed in the prepared area and secured with sutures.

Following the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. Your dentist will provide you with specific post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
